Update on Group Purito Norte - Maria

Entrepreneur: Maria Quesquen
Location: San Juan De Lurigancho-lima, Peru
Amount Repaid: $850.00 of $850.00

Though this loan finished sometime ago, we thought you might appreciate a current update. We were unable to speak with Senora Maria, treasurer of group Purito Norte, but the president of the group, Senora Elena, offered to speak with us about how her group and current loan are going.

Senora Elena is a member of Group Purito Norte, a group which has been receiving loans from EDAPROSPO for nearly 4 years. In the description it was incorrectly specified that Senora Maria's loan was an individual loan rather than a group loan among other informational discrepancies. In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee.

We were able to meet with Senora Elena in her home where she runs a framing business with her son. Her son is in charge of making prints and she frames them before distributing them to her customers in the North of Lima. She started this business nearly 10 years ago after her son taught her how to frame the prints he was making. She has grown quickly and now has to hire someone to help to stay up on her orders. She can make nearly 10 framed prints a day which she sells for 40 soles each. She would someday soon like to buy a store in North Lima so she wouldn't have to rely on other businesses to sell her work. Recently she received her savings from EDAPROSPO which she had accumulated over 3 years. She was able to purchase a big bulk of frames at lower prices. She is proud to have this successful business and would someday soon like to go back and visit her 3 sons living in New York. Finally she reported that all group members are doing well in their payments including Senora Maria who now has a car oil shop.

Senora Elena and Maria were funded through Kiva’s partner EDAPROSPO, a microfinance institution in Peru. EDAPROSPO seeks to use micro-credit to foster productive commercial activity for the sake of economic and social development within vulnerable urban and rural sectors traditionally neglected by commercial banks.

A Journal Update for Sorbeh Group

Entrepreneur: Sorbeh Group
Location: Makeni, Sierra Leone
Amount Repaid: $428.58 of $500.00

Greetings are coming to you from Adama Kamara, the leader of Sorbeh III group from Makeni, in northern Sierra Leone. Adama Kamara, speaking on behalf of the group was very pleased about the loan she received from you and sends a lot of thanks to you for the supporting hand rendered to her and her group members.

Adama received a loan of SLL 500,000 from you. She invested the entire loan in her business – she bought 1 bag of rice, 1 bag of sugar, 5 gallons of palm-oil (the most popular cooking oil), and half carton margi (used to give sauce a sweet taste). Over the months, Adama’s business improves so that she was able to make enough profit to include new items into her business.

Adama also uses the profit to pay school fees for her children. She has 4 children; all of them are attending school – 2 Junior Secondary School and 2 in primary school. She also uses the profit to feed herself and family and meet her daily financial challenges.

The loan has also been very helpful to other members of the group, Adama told me. One of the group members used to buy only a trip-full of fire-woods but can now buy 3 trips full of fire-woods. The other members can now travel to neighboring make-shift-business-centers (called lumas) to buy goods in larger quantity.

Adama is very grateful to you for the loan. She thanks you and will like you to continue assisting them.

A Journal Update for Fearness group

Entrepreneur: Fairness Group
Location: Makeni, Sierra Leone
Amount Repaid: $875.00 of $1,125.00

Greetings are coming to you from Kadiatu Kamara, the leader of Fearness group from Makeni, in northern Sierra Leone. Kadiatu, speaking on behalf of the group was very pleased about the loan she received from you and sends a lot of thanks to you for the supporting hand rendered to her and her group members.

Kadiatu received a loan of SLL 1,200,000 from you. She invested the entire loan in her business – she bought a variety of items – dried fish, five-gallon-containers, kerosene, palm-oil, garden eggs, etc. Consequently, Kadiatu’s business increased. Her profit-to-sales-margin also increases. With the profit she makes, Kadiatu increases her meal to 3 times a day. She also uses the profit to pay school fees for her grandchildren. She has 3 grandchildren – 1 in class II, the other is in class I and the other is in Junior Secondary school III. These are the children of her one and only son who is currently not doing anything. Her husband too is currently not working – he paralyzed some years ago. Thus Kadiatu has the sole responsibility of looking after the entire family. She is able to do so out of the profit she makes out of her business.

Kadiatu sends a lot of thanks to you because of the help rendered to them. She is calling on you to continue giving out your help to them. “You are a great people,” Kadiatu told me. “Their help is very great especially so as it came after the devastation left behind by the war” she concluded.

[I am very sorry for the wrong information posted earlier on. The leader of this group is Kadiatu Kamara on the left and not Rugiatu as earlier on stated. Kadiatu has only one son and in earlier report, she referred to her three grandchildren and one child as her children – a very common practice here for people to referred to other children as theirs. She mentioned that her husband is a businessman because she was ashamed to say that he was paralyzed].
